Preserved high on UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites, Krakow shares this honour with two neighbouring Sites. Infamous Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest WWII Nazi extermination centre 40 miles west of Krakow, and the 13th century Wieliczka Salt Mines 7 miles east of Cracow. Then 40 miles south of the city the panoramic Tatra Mountains start to rise, with Zakopane as the tourist centre in all four seasons. and rafting in the Dunajec Gorge, or the Black Madonna shrine at Jasna Gora. Whilst back in Krakow, famous Kazimierz, the oldest Jewish Quarter in Poland, and centre for the filming of 'Schindler's List', is rapidly overtaking the Old Town as an alternative centre for culture and entertainment. You'll need at least a week to see all that Krakow has to offer. But it won't be an expensive one.
